You’ve seen this image countless times on postcards, wallpapers, and the covers of travel magazines. But the moment you see it with your own eyes, you’ll realize that while photos can capture its beauty, they can’t convey the sheer awe it inspires.

Lake Louis lies at an elevation of 1,731 meters, and its waters come from the meltwater of the Victoria Glacier. The color of the lake is its greatest attraction—an indescribable milky blue-green hue. This is because the glacial meltwater contains fine rock flour; when sunlight hits the water, these suspended particles scatter blue-green light waves. The color of the lake’s water changes with the seasons and weather, ranging from deep blue in early spring to emerald green in midsummer, and then to sapphire blue in autumn.

Dream Lotus Lake: The Scenery on the 20-Canadian-Dollar Bill

If Lake Louise is a refined lady, then Moraine Lake is a modest, unassuming beauty hidden away. Although it’s only 14 kilometers from Lake Louise, Moraine Lake has a completely different charm.

Lake Moraine lies at an elevation of 1,885 meters, higher than Lake Louise. It is set against the backdrop of the Valley of the Ten Peaks, where ten mountains, each over 3,000 meters high, stand in a row, creating a majestic and spectacular scene. This scene was featured on the Canadian $20 banknote from 1969 to 1979 and is known as the ”Twenty Dollar View.”

Lake Moraine’s color is more intense than that of Lake Louise. Every year from late June to mid-July, when glacial meltwater reaches its peak, the lake takes on its deepest ”Moraine Blue.” The top of Rockpile, a pile of boulders by the lake, offers the best vantage point for capturing a panoramic view of Dream Lotus Lake. However, it’s worth noting that during peak season, you’ll need to wait in line for over half an hour to hike this short, 200-meter trail.

Best Time to Travel and Seasonal Highlights

Late June–Mid-July: The Best Time to Visit Menglian Lake

This is the time of year when Menglian Lake is at its most vibrant. With abundant meltwater from the glaciers and the lake surface just beginning to thaw, the concentration of rock powder is at its highest, making the water an almost unreal shade of blue. However, this is also when the lake is most crowded; the parking lot at Menglian Lake fills up as early as 4 a.m.

July–August: The Best Time to Visit Lake Louise

All hiking trails are open, and you can rent a canoe to paddle on the lake. The terrace at the Fairmont Hotel on the lakeshore is the perfect spot for afternoon tea. However, the crowds at this time of year are absolutely overwhelming—be prepared for a lot of people.

Mid-September to early October: Larch Season

This is my top recommendation for the best time to visit. The number of tourists has dropped, and the larch trees have turned a golden yellow, creating a stunning contrast against the azure lake waters. The hiking trails leading to Larch Valley are most popular during this season.

November–May: A Winter Wonderland

When Lake Louise freezes over, it becomes a natural ice rink, and ice-carved castles are erected on the lake. The Fairmont Hotel maintains a skating rink along the lakeshore. The Moraine Lake Road is closed during the winter (typically from mid-October to late May of the following year), so it is not accessible by car.

Must-Try Activities

Canoeing on Lake Louise

Paddling a canoe across the azure lake is perhaps one of the most romantic things you can do in Canada. Canoe rentals are available on the lakeshore for about 125 Canadian dollars per hour, and each canoe can accommodate 2–3 people. We recommend going right when they open at 8 a.m., when the lake is calmest and the light is best.

Hike on the Plain of Six Glaciers

Starting from Lake Louis, the round-trip hike is approximately 14 kilometers with an elevation gain of about 365 meters, taking 4–6 hours. The trail follows the western shore of the lake, gradually ascending until it reaches an alpine tea house. The tea house has no electricity or running water; all supplies are delivered by helicopter or on horseback. Sipping a cup of hot chocolate here while taking in the panoramic view of six glaciers—this might just be the most unique afternoon tea in the world.

Menglian Lake Stone Pile Viewing Platform

It’s a 15-minute walk from the parking lot to the top of the rock pile, which offers the most iconic view of Dream Lotus Lake. If you want to avoid the crowds, you can continue along the Consolation Lakes Trail—a round-trip hike of about 6 kilometers—where there are far fewer visitors.

Larch Valley

Starting from Menglian Lake, the round-trip hike is approximately 8.6 kilometers with an elevation gain of about 535 meters. In mid- to late September, the larch trees throughout the valley turn golden yellow. With the snow-capped peaks of the Shifen Valley in the background and the golden larch forest at your feet, every photo you take is a stunning shot.

Lake Louise Ski Resort

People don’t come to Lake Louise in winter to see the lake—they come to ski. Lake Louise Ski Resort is one of Canada’s largest ski resorts, with 4,200 acres of skiable terrain, offering trails suitable for everyone from beginners to experts. While dining at the Whitehorn Lodge at the summit, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Lake Louise and the Victoria Glacier through the windows.

Photography Guide

Best Photo Spots at Lake Louise：

The lakeside promenade in front of the Fairmont Hotel (classic view)

Fairview Lookout on the west shore of the lake (bird's-eye view, 1-kilometer hike)

Big Beehive Summit (the most breathtaking panoramic view; 10-kilometer round-trip hike)

Best Photo Spots at Menglian Lake：

The Top of the Rock Pile (Classic View)

Canoe Dock by the Lake (Reflection Angle)

Tower of Babel (a challenging climbing route, but with a spectacular view)

Best Time to Take Photos: Within 30 minutes after sunrise. At this time, the sun has just begun to shine on the mountaintop, and the lake is usually at its calmest, offering the perfect opportunity to capture the reflection of the snow-capped mountains.

Transportation and Parking

This is the biggest headache when traveling to Lake Louise and Lake Moraine.

Lake Louise Parking Lot: During peak season (June–September), the parking lot fills up by 8:00 a.m. Once the parking lot is full, visitors will be directed to the Lake Louise Ski Resort parking lot, 6 kilometers away, and then take a shuttle bus back.

Menglian Lake Parking Lot: Even more surprising—during peak season, it fills up as early as 4–5 a.m. Starting in 2023, the Moraine Lake Road will be closed to private vehicles during the summer; access will be limited to Parks Canada shuttle buses, Roam buses, or commercial tour vehicles.

Shuttle Bus: Reservations must be made in advance on the Parks Canada website; popular time slots sell out quickly. Adult tickets cost about 8 Canadian dollars.

This is also why more and more tourists are choosing private car services—no need to scramble for parking spots or wait in line for the bus; the driver and tour guide take you straight to the lake.

Accommodation Options

Fairmont Castle at Lake Louise: Right on the lake, with an unbeatable location—and unbeatable prices—over 1,000 Canadian dollars per night during peak season. But even if you’re not staying there, you can still go inside to take a look; the arched windows in the lobby look directly out onto the lake.

Lake Louis Village: Located about 4 kilometers from the lake, there are budget hotels and bed-and-breakfasts with relatively affordable rates.

Canmore/Banff: About a 45-minute to 1-hour drive from Lake Louise, with more options and lower prices.

BetterWay Travel: Make Your Trip to the Twin Lakes a Breeze

Parking at Lake Louise and Moraine Lake is a major headache for countless self-driving tourists.
